Bur Patch

The Bur Patch is a temporary abdominal fascial expander prosthesis which is used for:

Temporary abdominal closure of the planned open abdomen.
Daily staged abdominal repair (STAR) to combine damage control with a safe definitive repair by daily inspection.

The STAR surgical procedure has been used to treat the open abdomen and abdominal compartment syndrome as a result of:

Abdominal trauma
Intra-abdominal infections
Acute pancreatitis with and without infection
Bowel ischemia
Ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms
Abdominal organ transplantation
The "difficult-to-treat abdomen"
Stepwise closure of giant abdominal wall hernias

The Bur Patch marketed by NovoMedicus is manufactured in Germany. It has regulatory approval for use in both the United States and the European Union:

In response to surgeon feedback, NovoMedicus has increased the width of the device to accommodate obese patients, or patients with severe edema. It consists of two 20 cm by 40 cm biocompatible, high tensile strength, hook and loop sheets.

Indications

For temporary bridging of abdominal wall openings where primary closure is not possible and/or repeat abdominal entries are necessary.

Contraindications

The Bur Patch is not designed or intended for use as a permanent implant.
